Annelids: The clam worm is an example of a segmented
worm common to the sediments of the Littoral Zone (see the photo of burrows
to the right). It is a well equiped predator (protrusible jaws) and will
consume animals smaller than itself. Parapodia project from each body segment
and in the anterior region there are 4-5 pairs of sensory tentacles with
4 eyes (anterior cephalization). Like all annelids, the clam worm has the
ability to regenerate when cut in two pieces.
