The year 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the United National General Assembly adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, a document outlining the innate rights entitled to children. It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in Write the Wrong 2009, a nation-wide high school essay competition on Childs' Rights. High School Students are invited to respond to one or the following two essay prompts: either (1) what Childs' Rights issue, domestic or international, requires more media attention? or (2) What do Childs' Rights mean to me? The deadline for submissions is Friday April 10th. The winning essay will be published in The Walrus Magazine Online and the author will receive a Mac Mini. All five essay finalists will have their pieces published in an online magazine and will be invited to jhr's annual Human Rights Training Seminar in August, located in Toronto. The winning submission will be selected by a panel of Canada's top media personalities, including: Kevin Newman (Global National), Mark Kelley (CBC: The National), Marci Ien (CTV: Canada AM); Sally Armstrong (Maclean's), Jared Bland (The Walrus) and Ben Peterson (jhr). This competition is coupled with Human Rights curricular web resources as well as an Educator Survey, both of which are available at www.jhr.ca/writethewrong. There are also opportunities to become involved with jhr on a more permanent basis through starting a Chapter at your school: more information is also available on the website. Details about all aspects of this initiative are available at www.jhr.ca/writethewrong. I would appreciate you forwarding this email to students, teachers, administrators, and any other contacts in the education profession. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this initiative. With your participation, Write the Wrong 2009 will be Canada's largest nation-wide Human Rights Essay Competition. British Council Canada Cape Farewell Youth Expedition September 2008
High School Competition Deadline January 15 2008
The British Council Canada is pleased to announce a competition for High Schools throughout Canada to participate in an innovative arts and science project focused on climate change. The deadline for the competition is January 15, 2008. One school from each province or territory will be selected and offered the chance of taking part in this tremendous educational opportunity, by sending a pupil on the Cape Farewell/British Council 2008 Arctic expedition.
The downloadable application form is available on our website . Completed entries are to be mailed or faxed to the British Council Canada in Ottawa and will be assessed by the Centre for Educational Leadership at McGill University in Montreal.
The selected high schools will form Cape Farewell teams of Grade 10 and 11 students who are interested in working together to create climate change projects and events. Through their work, a final voyager from each school will be chosen to take part in the expedition from Iceland to Greenland and Baffin Island with an international group of students in September 2008. The students will receive assistance in their projects from some of the world’s top scientists and artists in preparation for the voyage and onboard the vessel.
The program is not simply about the voyage itself. Schools will enter the competition by outlining how, if selected, they would use this opportunity as a catalyst for cross-curricular work on climate change in the longer term. The “ground crew” will remain involved with the voyagers through international and national school links arising from the project. Teachers from each of the selected schools will be brought together (at the British Council’s expense) in February 2008 to plan the project.
We encourage you to visit our website for more information about the Cape Farewell program and other climate change awareness projects spearheaded by the British Council Canada. We believe that this is a really exceptional opportunity for developing highly creative work in curriculum development, project work and teaching, as well as a tremendous learning opportunity for all of the students involved in the program.
