Mission Statement

Bishops College is committed to excellence and equity, our goal being "Quality Education for Today for Tomorrow for All". We are a community of learners that believes in the uniqueness and importance of the individual and in the empowerment of all students to succeed in an ever-changing world. We involve students, parents and the community at large in decision-making about learning and school life. We strive to offer students a wide range of learning opportunities in a caring, secure, and creative environment, that motivates and reinforces a sense of self-worth and mutual respect and promotes the intellectual, social, spiritual and physical development of each individual

Lateness and Attendance

Parents and students are reminded to please pay particular attention to the issue of lateness and attendance. Both have been recognized by the school and district as being of priority for Senior High Schools.

Students are expected to be in each and every class and on time. Parents can only excuse students for lateness and attendance for medical reasons or family emergency.

Students are given a 3-late grace period as we realize that everyone is late from time to time. This grace period takes into account those days when 'the car wouldn't start' or 'the clock radio did not go off'. We also roll this over at the beginning of each term so students can start off fresh.

Your cooperation with helping reduce the amount of lateness and absenteeism by making this a priority is greatly appreciated.

SchoolConnects Automated Notification Service

As part of our School Development Process we recognize that improving student attendance as one of our top goals. In an effort to cut down on missed classes we are utilizing a new program called "Synrevoice". This is an automated service that calls and/or emails home all parents in our contact list and relays if a student has missed individual classes during the day. As well we are continuing to use the K12 Planet System to report daily attendance codes. We are still fine tuning this system and appreciate the patience and support of our parents. If your son/daughter is absent from school please send a note or email to their homeroom teacher.

If you do not want SchoolConnects to call or send e-mail messages to you, please notify the school. We will take you off the distribution lists. This system can also be used to send out announcements, take surveys and we hope to utilize more of it's options in the future. Please review this important document on "Maintaining Regular School Attendance"

Safe and Caring schools

Bishops College is a safe and caring school

Our School

Bishops College,an urban high school with French Immersion and English stream programs and now well into its fifth decade as an educational institution, is located in St. John's, NF, Canada. It offers grades 10 to 12 to a total student population of about 600 and operates under the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education curriculum. Bishops College is under the trusteeship of the Eastern School District

As a student-centered school we have made a commitment towards school effectiveness and technology integration in the learning process. One way we try and do this is through planning. Please see our ICT Plan and our School Growth Plan In May, 1999, we were awarded membership to the National Network of Innovative Schools, one of 24 schools in Canada so honoured. As a member in this network we continue to innovate in many ways including participation in the GrassRoots program as well as attending national and local conferences.

We have a progressive award-winning staff that actively pursues partnerships with the business community. In St. John's the provincial capital, industries are resource and service based: manufacturing, tourism and telecommunications. There is a growing high technology sector. Much of the employment is small business or government based. The city hosts a university with a student population of approximately 20,000 as well as various other post-secondary institutions and research facilities. The Centre for Cold Ocean Research (C-Core), the Institute for Marine Dynamics , and the Fluvarium, have worldwide reputations for excellence in their fields.

Bishops College offers a wide variety of courses (over 100) to all 3 levels of students. We are proud to be consistently in the top five high schools in overall number of academic scholarships awarded throughout the province and, We have had great success with Advanced Placement courses and continue to offer them as subscription permits. Recently we were very pleased to hear of our seventh alumnus to receive the prestigious Rhodes scholarship.

We have an active student body taking part in a full range of athletic teams which are very competitive at the provincial level as you can see by the banners hanging in our gym. We also have public speaking, debating, music, art, and drama programs that have won provincial, national and international recognition.

Many of our staff have been honoured with the national Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as many other awards and recognitions. For a more complete picture of our Prime Minister's Awards success go here.

We have hosted some very interesting Visitors to our school.

About the website

This site is constructed mainly by our students and staff to serve our school community. It takes a great committment on the part of many volunteers to keep such a large site running and up to date. On our site you can take a quiz, check your homework, get class lectures notes, email any teacher or take a virtual tour of the school building. We hope you enjoy your time at our site and we hope you learn something during your virtual stay!

Our Web team consists of the following ;

Students

Most of the pages have been created or revised by students as part of projects for courses in nearly all disciplines. To get some idea of how students are involved in building the site you may enjoy our grassroots projects.

Staff

The web site originated as part of our five year technology and growth initiative; Vision 2000 which ran from 1995 to 1999. The project leaders were originally the technology and learning resource teachers but has grown to include all staff. Staff members have constructed personal and course pages to support their classroom teaching. Several of them have also led grassroots projects.

Web Editor

In 1999, through funding obtained through the Network of Innovative Schools we hired a web editor to help us update and create pages to help our site better serve our students, parents and staff. Thanks to Sam Wells.

Web Master

Our web master is a full time teacher whose duties include overseeing the website. The sucess of the web site is due to his leadership, and all the great work of the staff and students here at Bishops. It is also the role of our web master whenever possible to share ideas and opportunities from the web and to encourage students and teachers to utilize the web. This often leads to an enhancement of our website and a very positive learning experience. For more information go here!
